quirky glimpses of Young...

Young is about 79km east of Temora...
I was intrigued by some of this country town's quirky features..
The photo on the left represents several poles near street crossings which double as a border round a small seat rest area...
The photo on the right is of a welcome feature at S and AJ's Cafe and Restaurant...

The above 2 photos =  views inside S and AJ's...

morning street peace + puppy love...

It's a gentle autumn morning in Temora...
Slowly, the sun peeks out...

Bella is quietly feeding her puppies...

All's right with the world...

neighbour's cat...

The neighbour's cat is beginning to wander in for a visit...
The little one seems to long for attention and rubs...
Of course, I accommodate...

Sadly, my son-in-law is not too fond of cats...
Initially, I found Flash on the bonnet of his car...
So I had to scuttle her before he noticed...

glimpses of Wagga...

On the day we visited the Junee Chocolate and Licorice Factory, we first visited Wagga...
My 2 grandsons were getting their regular holiday dentist check-up...
While they waited for their appointment, I wandered nearby streets...
These photos only represent glimpses of the outskirts of the Wagga township near the Murrumbidgee River...

At the end of the street above is a walkway and cycleway high above the Murrumbidgee...

It was difficult to see much of the river because of all the trees, and I had limited time to explore the extensive walkway to see if it opened up further...
I needed to get back to my daughter and grandsons...

On the way back to my daughter and grandsons, I missed the walkway turnoff but found this lovely church and, not far away, a rather sad old building that looked almost abandoned...
Quite a contrast...

my REAL first day of retirement...

PASSING THOUGHT: I regard today as the REAL first day of my retirement...Students are back at school, starting Term 2, and I am not... I have watched students pass by in the street and feel so very strange...

I took the above 2 photos at my daughter's Temora Public School last Monday afternoon, Anzac Day...
(My daughter was doing preparation for the new term, so I explored the school)...
The school opened in December 1880
and expanded into a Superior Public School in December 1901...
In January 1923, it became a District School and then an Intermediate High School in January 1928...
In January 1953, it became a Public School again...

The school currently has an enrolment of 271 students
including 8 students of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander origin...

I feel my photos represent how I feel right now...a kind of sadness...
But I must keep walking toward another light...

Junee Licorice and Chocolate Factory...

Junee Licorice and Chocolate factory is quite an experience...
Multiple dining experiences in both outdoor and indoor spaces
plus, of course, the dazzling chocolate and licorice shop...

Rustic nooks abound...

There is even the odd old vehicle there...

I even adored lunch - a new taste experience for me...loaded fries...with pulled pork...

a couple of Temora signs...

Temora building styles...old and new...

Love this wrap-around sign on the Temora Memorial Hall...
Tree shadows add some extra art...
The hall was opened in 1956.
It is a memorial to those who served in the armed forces in World War II.
The police station is opposite the hall, hence the Anzac Day parade yesterday started outside the police station and swung round the memorial hall to Callaghan Park...

The beautiful Diamonds and Dust shop finds its home in this building, a Temora icon...one of the first traders in Temora...
It is about the size of a football field...

The Shamrock Hotel was built in the late 1880's...
It is affectionately known as The Shammy...

Originally, another general store in Temora...

NRCC House is home to Temora Library and Pinnacle Community Services...
It is alongside Temora Medical Complex which was opened November 23, 2012...

silent angels...

so many fell
on the battlefields
of war

but so many
fell

later

inner scars
torments
festered
broke
the person who was

and left
the curse
of shrapnel

for them
the war was not over

it was far from over

but close by
there were those
who nursed
this shell of life
fighting still on a battlefield
only visible
to those who
tried to help
tried to understand

these were
the war's
unsung heroes
bearing
untold stories

the war's
silent angels

P.S. This poem is in response to a moving story told today by a Temora woman of her family's experience with returned soldiers.
For some, the war was not over, was not won...
For the silent angels, the battle had just begun...

Temora Anzac Day...

Today, I attended the most magical Anzac Day ceremony I have ever experienced...in Temora...
Temora schools lined up behind veterans and marched a short distance to leafy Callaghan Park, one and a half blocks from the main street...
(Sadly, the usual band had been struck with covid cases, but still, the parade went on)...
The main ceremony was conducted in the park...
Well-placed speakers created a wonderful surround sound - especially for the organ keyboard sounds of The Recessional and the piano keyboard sounds of Abide With Me...
(The Recessional was played during the laying of wreaths by all Temora schools and community groups)...
Most Temora citizens walked to the ceremony...as did we...(no mass gathering of cars)...
It was all very moving on a sun-filled day with many sheltering trees in the park...
Perhaps, the most stirring experience for me happened right at the end...
The keyboard pianist played a long medley of war songs as people chatted or very slowly drifted away from the park...
The first song was White Cliffs of Dover and the second was We'll Meet Again...
By this stage, I struggled to keep back tears...
Here are a few photos from the experience...

A highway police patrol car led the way...
